A self-sacrificing caregiver, who was there for those on her watch. For example, in 1949-50, Evelyn withdrew from college to lend support to her mom during a personal crisis; later, a care-giver for her husband's health challenges; then, again care-giving for her mom, this time as she dealt with health challenges including cancer; later, for her dad during his aging health challenges; also, for the dissolvement of the long-run family business, et al. It is no wonder that she resorted to the canopy of her only son, DeMarco, who suddenly passed away without whispering a "Good-bye Momma." So, even when the opportunity came for her to pursue a life "for Evelyn," the spunk for a new beginning must not have been there!
This scenario reminds me of Christ telling his disciples if anyone wants to come after him, they must deny themselves, take up their cross, and follow him. Having been an arms-length participant in many of her hills and valleys, I now feel that part of me also died with her, as Paul said in Romans 14:7, none of us truly die to ourselves alone.
