My Dearest Maurice,

I remember the day our paths first crossed at my niece Lanette’s twenty-first birthday party. On our fifth date you learned your best friend had passed and you had to return to Maryland where you lived. I was packing my bag to go with you when my grandson Darnell put his arms up and held both arms out at the door. He said “Nana, you cannot go with this man. You don’t know him.” However, he did get to know you as his “Papa Maurice.” You were the Papa he never had. You bonded together, teaching him how to count money and play baseball. He said Papa, “I don’t like baseball.” When he played basketball in high school, you attended all his games. One night on the way to his game, you hit a deer, but that did not stop you from going to the game with the front fender of the car hanging down. Darnell called him Papa, as did Linda, Steve, and great granddaughter, Alayah. You called her “Lay Lay” and she called you Papa as well. You were so kind and caring. You loved all your family and enjoyed spending time with them.

You often visited your nieces and nephew, Journey, Ikeshia, Issac, and Joyce. You always told Journey that Uncle Maurice loves you. You had a picture of her on the desk by your chair so you could look at her every day. You also enjoyed talking to your friend, Joe Mayo, on the phone and visiting. You shared many years of memories. Maurice, you also loved the Lord. I will always remember that on Sundays, you would get up 2½ hours early to get to church, long before the church service began. Beloved, you had many friends, among them, Reverend Lockhart. Pastor would leave a prayer message on the phone, and you would listen to it many times and would say “Pastor Lockhart is a good man.”

I thank you, Pastor Lockhart for your prayers and visits. Speaking to you and hearing your prayers are a comfort to me at this time.

I Love you Maurice and will miss you.

Your, loving and devoted fiancé, Ruby
