Blessed are they which hunger and thirst after righteousness: for they shall be filled. Blessed are the merciful: for they shall obtain mercy. Blessed are the pure in heart: for they shall God". Blessed are the peacemakers: for they shall be called the children of God." Matthew 5: 3-9

Moses Lewis, the son of Daniel and Percoria Venable Lewis was born on September 12, 1944, in Cumberland, Virginia. He was the only surviving baby of triplets. He lost both his parents at a very early age. After the passing of his mother Moses was lovingly raised by Walter and Mamie Allen of Cumberland, VA. At a very early age Moses was baptized into the Christian faith and joined the Rocky Mount Baptist Church.

On September 8, 1973, he joined in Holy Matrimony to Sallie Trent. Moses and Sallie had two daughters Michelle Hodges and Jessica Lewis whom they raised with Love. They were blessed to raise their niece Sherry Trent Mitchell after the untimely passing of her mother. Moses and Sallie have been married for 51 years.

Moses graduated from Luther P. Jackson High School in Cumberland, Virginia in 1963. Moses played on the school baseball team and won many awards including most valuable pitcher and most valuable player. After school Moses decided to join the United States Air Force. He was stationed at Langley Air Force Base in Hampton, Virginia. Moses was very Proud of being a member of the Air Force. He often spoke very fondly of his time at Langley.

After serving in the Air Force Moses worked at Powhatan Correctional Center for many years. Moses started out as an officer and later served as Captain for many years prior to retiring from corrections. Moses served as a Deacon at Rocky Mount Baptist Church for 30 years. He served one rotation as Chairman of the Deacon Board. Moses loved music and singing. He was one of the founding members of the Rocky Mount Male Chorus. Where he served as secretary. Moses has always had a deep love for God and his Church. Moses was always willing to go above and beyond to do anything he could for God and his Church. In October 2023 Moses was recognized by the Deacon and Trustee Conference of Middle Virginia for his long outstanding service to the conference.

Moses was a farmer at heart he raised chickens for Holly Farms and Tyson's Foods for many years. He also loved gardening and would plant many vegetables, including greens that he would graciously share with his community.

Moses was a very soft-spoken kind man. He cared deeply about his family and would always try to put his family before himself no matter how good or bad he was doing. He was very loving and put God f irst in everything he did. He set an example on how to be a true man of God by not only what he said, but how he lived his life.

Moses and Sallie have always had a love for children and adored all of their nieces and nephews. They had the honor of playing an extra hand in helping to raise four of their nieces and nephews Sherry Trent Mitchell, Charles Antonio Jackson, Jr, Brandon Jamar Jackson, and Helena Margaret Trent.

Our beloved husband, father, brother, uncle, and friend made the transition from an earthly dwelling to his heavenly home on Friday November 1, 2024. He was preceded in death by his brothers Paul Lewis, Joshua Lewis, John Lewis, James Lewis, Joseph Lewis, Frank Allen, and James Allen; three sisters Polly, Gertrude, and Dorothy Lewis; three brothers in law, James Trent, Jessie Trent, and Leroy Laury; three sisters in Law, Dorothy, Francis and Anna Lewis.

He leaves to cherish his devoted wife, Sallie Lewis; two loving daughters Michele Hodges and Jessica Lewis; one bonus daughter, Sherry Mitchell; one sister Mollie Laury; three sisters in Law, Helen Brooks (St. Cassell), Kathleen Jackson (Robert, Jr.), and Claudette Trent; one brother in law, Lee Trent; Moses has a host of nieces and nephews whom he loved so dearly as well as many devoted friends. A special thanks to Helen Brooks and Jamie Jackson for their devoted attention and care during his time of sickness.

When I must leave you

for a little while
