Samuel Monroe Saunders was born on May 12, 1953 to Walter Saunders and Mary Jane Hatcher Saunders in Powhatan County, Virginia. He entered into eternal life on October 9, 2009 at Coler Goldwater Memorial Hospital in New York, New York. In his early life Sam was reared by his grandmother, Florene Mayo. Later he moved to Long Island, New York with his parents. He was baptized at an early age at the Mt. Pero Baptist Church of Ballsville, Virginia by Rev. McCoy Lewis. When he moved to New York, he joined the First Baptist Church of Riverhead under Rev. George Martin. He was a member of the youth usher ministry. He attended Riverhead High School. Sam loved sports, swimming, water skiing, and wrestling in which he was county champ. He worked at Hazeltine Corp. and Toyota Car Dealership of Riverhead, New York. He was married to Everline Wilsonon July 28, 1973. To this union they had no children. Sam was in a severe automobile accident on July 4, 1975, Sam loved life and was loved by his many friends. This accident challenged and changed his life. Sam has been confined to the Port Jefferson Nursing Home and the Brunswick Hospital in Amityville. For 32 years he was confined to the Coler Goldwater Memorial Hospital in New York City, which became his home of choice. Everyone who knew him there, enjoyed Sam. He leaves to cherish his memory, his parents Walter and Mary Jane Hatcher Saunders of Powhatan, Virginia; one sister, Sandra Laverne Saunders Dozier (Marvin) of Southampton, New York, two brothers, Walter Hatcher of Richmond, California, Troy Saunders (Sandy) of Chesapeake, Virginia, four nieces" two nephews, one great nephew, two great nieces, six aunts, four uncles, two great aunts and a host of cousins and friends.
