Obituary of Stanley Martin Mayo

Please share a memory of Stanley to include in a keepsake book for family and friends.

Stanley Martin Mayo was born to Gustavius and Bertha Braxton Mayo on October 28,1960, in Cumberland, VA. He was educated in Cumberland County Public Schools. At an early age, he became a member of Little Fork Baptist Church, where he developed a strong sense of faith, family, and community that guided him throughout his life.

In 1993, Stanley began his career with the Goochland County Sheriff’s Office, initially serving his community as a Patrol Deputy. As his career and education progressed, Stanley respectfully earned the position of Investigator and proudly attained the rank of Sergeant. Stanley retired in 2016.

Stanley had a deep passion for the outdoors, finding joy in both hunting and fishing. He could often be found in the woods or on the water from sunrise to sunset, in all types of weather, fully immersed in nature’s beauty. He had many successful outings; however, he still appreciated the experience even when the deer weren’t running, or the fish weren’t biting.

Although he was an avid outdoorsman, Stanley also found comfort in cooking. He was a homegrown chef who could create magic in the kitchen, using his imagination or his grandmother’s treasured recipe book for inspiration. He hosted many meals for holidays and special occasions and made sure his family and friends knew that “if you go away from here hungry, it’s your own fault”.

Stanley had a passion for driving trucks, tractors, four-wheelers, and pretty much any heavy equipment he had the opportunity of getting his hands on. He was a kind man whom one could always count on when in need of help, albeit he’d often share his opinion on how the situation could have been avoided in the first place.

While he found much pleasure in his staycations, Stanley also enjoyed taking trips to New Jersey and Pennsylvania to visit family. He would often reminisce about his Aunt Orene Wesley (Renee) picking him up as a child and taking him on trips to Florida, and he sought to continue that tradition with his loving granddaughter.

Stanley inherited his father’s love for dogs, and over the years, he was fortunate to share his life with several beloved K9 companions, including Sandy, Feara, Tigger, Winnie, Repo, Marymack, Belu, Chugg, Santee, Enaj, Braxston, Phoenix and Kalysta. He also enjoyed the company of two birds, Billy and Betty, and a grand dog named Tan.

Stanley unexpectedly departed this life on September 20, 2024. He was preceded in death by his parents; his sister, Bernice Mayo; his brothers, Arthur, Carl and Wesley Mayo; and one sister-in-law, Debra Wynn.

Stanley is survived by many loved ones who will cherish his memory, including his devoted wife and best friend, Tina (Maylo); his amazing and genuine son, Stanley R. Carrington (Stan); an angel of a daughter-in-law, Bridgette N. Carrington; his adored granddaughter, Courtney M. Carrington (Courtney Q). He is also survived by one brother, Marvin Mayo; two sisters, Pamela and Gloria Mayo; three aunts, Carole Mayo, June Braxton, and Orene Wesley (whose relationship was that of a second mother); nieces, Masheda, Latoya, Darlene, Trina, Sheena, Princess Austin (who held a special

place in his heart), and Morgan Pate (his little “girl” hunting and riding partner); nephews, Tommie, Darrell, Clifton, Gavin, and Prince; a close cousin, Gary Payne; dear friends, Debby Armstrong, Tommy and Diane Woodson, Carolyn Dunn, Sam Parrish, Raul and Aida Hernandez, The Higgs Family; three brothers-in-law, William (Rooster) Wynn, and Steve and Robert McDaniel; one sister-in-law, Janet Sievers, and a vast number of other loving relatives and friends.

Letters to Stanley from Family

Maylo,

I don't know what navigating this life-changing event means or how to actually go through it without you by my side, but I know I will be trusting in God and staying in faith because I know I can count on Him, as He has not failed me yet. I will be replaying every moment of every memory of how blessed we were to be a part of each other's lives, over and over again. I love you and miss you so much... You would always tell me, in your own words, 'You'll Be Alright,' so I'm holding you to that. ❤️

For now, I will close but leave others with this: Hug a family member, love yourself, call a friend, and MAKE EVERY SECOND COUNT because time flies. I know, for me, the 23 years of knowing my husband and the 18 years of being married to him sure did.

Love,

Your Wife

Paw Paw,

We hope Heaven is treating you well, filled with endless laughter and all the things you loved most. Down here, we continue to share your stories, and it’s your sense of humor that we miss the most. You had a special gift for bringing smiles, even on the hardest days, and we still catch ourselves laughing at the memories you left us with.

Thank you for being such a wonderful father, grandfather, and father-in-law. You were always funny, kind, and full of love. We know you’re watching over us now, wearing that same big smile and probably cracking jokes with the angels.

Until we meet again, keep spreading joy up there. We’ll miss you every day.

With love,
Stan, Bridgette, and Courtney
