Obituary of Burley Solomon Booker

Please share a memory of Burley to include in a keepsake book for family and friends.
Burley Solomon Booker of Cumberland, Virginia was born on January 22, 1947, in Cumberland County Virginia, to Agnes W. Booker. He was reared in a loving home, the only boy and the youngest of six siblings. He accepted Christ at an early age at Zion Baptist Church and was an active member of the church and choir until his passing. Burley completed his education at Luther P. Jackson High School, where he laid the foundation for a life filled with dedication and hard work. He forged lifelong friendships, none more cherished than those with his best friend, William Anderson. Burley embarked on a new chapter of his life in 1969 as he exchanged vows with his beloved wife, Carrie, in New York. Together, they built a home filled with love and laughter, and from this union four children were born: Maria, Byron, Coretta, and Eric. Burley's greatest joy in life was his family, his grandchildren, and great grandchildren, He was a pillar of strength and support for his family, always ready with a kind word, and a helping hand and you never had to guess what he thought. He was a beloved husband, father, grandfather, brother, uncle, family member, and friend. Throughout his life, Burley dedicated himself to serving others. He worked in security for over 40 years until he retired from the Virginia Department of Corrections in 2010 where his commitment to his work and his colleagues left a lasting impact. Even after retiring in 2010, Burley found fulfillment in staying active and engaged, taking on roles as a custodian and crossing guard for Cumberland County Public Schools. His dedication to his community and his unwavering work ethic were evident in everything he did. He peacefully transitioned from this life on Friday, May 3rd, 2024, in Cumberland, Virginia. He was preceded in death by his mother, son-in-law, Wayne Langhorne; one granddaughter, Latiera; four sisters, Sarah Catoe, Janie Booker, Mary "twins" and Marie Booker; two brothers -in-law, Arnold and Kerney; his best friend William Anderson. He leaves to cherish his memories: his wife Carrie for over 55 years; four children, Maria, Byron, Coretta, and Eric (Cherry); nine grandchildren, Franchelle, Kierra, Montesa (Lawrence), Dlisha, Zyaira, Darron (Elizabeth), Jonathan, Shawn, and Xavier; five great grandchildren, Amaya, Antonio, Amanda, Jace and Camden. His love and guidance will continue to inspire and guide them always; one sister, Virgina Bartee, a host of family and friends. In addition to his immediate family, Burley leaves behind a legacy of love and kindness in the hearts of his in-laws: Katie (John), Marion, Katherine (Russell), Sharron, Solomon, Alice (Steve), Jennifer, Jerry, and his beloved mother-in-law, Eartha. In the quiet moments of reflection, let us remember Burley for his honesty, his love of music, and the countless lives he touched with his humor. Though he may be gone from our sight, his memory will live on in the hearts of all who knew and loved him.
