Jerry Darnell Lewis Obituary

Jerry Darnell (JD) Lewis was born December 31, 1952, in Cumberland County, Virginia to Mattie Crump and Abraham Lincoln Lewis, Jr.

He accepted Christ at an early age and was an active member in Little Fork Baptist Church, Cartersville, VA. He was the oldest of five siblings - brothers, Gregory, Anthony, Kevin, Mark and sister, Miranda.

Jerry attended Cumberland County public schools and played football for the Cumberland Dukes. He continued his education at Virginia Union University, graduating with a Bachelor of Science Degree.

Jerry had numerous jobs before his professional career with the State of Virginia. He worked with the Division of Social Services, (DSS), for thirty years until his retirement in 2019. He was on the management team and was known for spoiling his staff. He enjoyed mentoring his co-workers and always had a smile on his face. While at DSS he affectionately became known as "JD" and built lasting friendships he maintained after retirement.

Jerry didn't have children, but he was a natural father figure. During his teen years he mentored at the Richmond Boys and Girls Club. While at Virginia Union University he was a Dorm manager and mentor for the football team. Jerry was an excellent big brother and trusted grandson and son.

After retirement, Jerry enjoyed taking road trips, going to Roses, rooting for the San Francisco 49rs, and making music sticks… we often fight over.

Jerry peacefully entered eternal rest on Wednesday, April 10, 2024, in Richmond, VA. He is preceded in death by his father, Abraham, three uncles, Jefferson David Lewis, Ray Gordan and Dave Crump.

He is survived by his mother, Mattie Crump Gomez of New York; four brothers, Gregory Lewis of Richmond, VA., Anthony Lewis of Cumberland, VA., Kevin (Rosalyn) Lewis of Glenarden, Maryland, and Mark Gomez of New York; one sister, Miranda Lewis, of Richmond, VA., four aunts, Ellanora Lewis, Beatrice Gordan, Virginia Crump and Cora Crump; a host of nieces and nephews, cousins and close friends Curtis and Donna and devoted friend Charmaine and neighbor Katy, to mourn him. We will all miss him! Greatly.

Although the sun has set…

we know God knows best,

for he has taken you home to rest.

We too must take that test.

You will not be forgotten.

We cherish the smile on your face.

You have run a good race.
