Obituary of John J. Hatcher
Obituary
John Jasper Hatcher was born on February 17, 1947, in Cumberland, Virginia to Willie and Katie Hatcher.
John J. Hatcher graduated from Luther P. Jackson High School in Cumberland, VA. He started his career with AMF and was later employed by Phillip Morris where he retired in February 2006 after 35 years of service.
At an early age, John accepted Christ, was baptized, and joined Mount Olive Baptist Church in Cumberland, VA. He later moved to Richmond, VA and became a Watchcare member of Good Shepherd Baptist Church.
John would give a helping hand to anyone, lend a few dollars to anyone, and would say don’t bring the change back (in the words of Johnny boy). John enjoyed having folks over for summer cookouts. He enjoyed going to dances with his wife and taking the kids to the racetrack on Saturday night. He had a passion for cars. His most prized possession was his 71 Sting Ray corvette. He also belonged to the Fantastic Four Van Club in the 90's.
His health started to fail in 2018. He entered hospice care in 2021. A gratitude of thanks to Gentiva Hospice Care for the warm, loving care of John and his family. In 2023 they pulled together a small intimate cookout for John. They provided everything including an outfit and a small car parade. The smile on his face created a lasting memory for the family.
He was preceded in death by his son, John Jasper Hatcher Jr. and his parents.
He leaves to cherish fond memories, his devoted wife of 57 years, Gladys K. Hatcher, his devoted children; Y’vette Winston(Marcus) and Wayne Hatcher (Diane); four grandchildren, Kayla, Ian, Jovon, and Jada, four siblings; his devoted sister, Sheila Booker (Bernard), a devoted brother, Bernard Hatcher (Carolyn), Elsie O’Neal, and Joyce Webster (Tommy), brother-in-law; Don Hatcher (Kathleen), two devoted cousins, Stanley Booker and Gloria Sykes, and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.
The family would like to express its special thanks to Gentiva Hospice Care, especially Brittany Wallace, Madeline Wright, and many others.
