I’ve had the honor and privilege of having Skip in my life not only as my closest cousin, but as my dearest friend for almost 5 decades. Together we reached major milestones and experienced memorable moments in our late teens and as young adults – too numerous to name. When I became older and we were both in the Richmond area we used to love to go dancing practically every weekend; no matter where we were someone knew who he was…it was incredible…and he rightfully earned the title, “Life of the Party!” I was there cheering him on when he fulfilled his academic and professional career goals, as well as when he finally found and married his true love. Though we took different paths later in life – his starting a wonderful family and my trying to find a place in the professional world, we still supported and celebrated each other along the way. What I wouldn’t give to again hear his special VM message, “Hello there, my favorite cousin…God Bless you…love you, love you, love you!” He was my brother, my confidant, and I thank God for such a blessing. It has therefore been extremely difficult to find the right words to express what losing him has meant, but I recently came across this poem to share with as a loving tribute:
We know that life must go on without you,
But nothing will ever be the same,
It’s so very hard to hide the pain
When someone speaks your name
Sad are the hearts that love you
Silent the tears that fall
Going about our days without seeing your face or hearing your voice
Is the hardest part of all
You did so many things for others
Your heart was so very kind and true
Whenever we needed a word of inspiration, encouragement or prayer,
We could always count on you
The special years will not return
When we were all together
But with the fond memories we hold dear
You will walk with us forever.
I am eternally grateful to God for such a bond that countless others can only hope for! Thank you for bringing sunshine to our world, and joy to our hearts. Rest in Paradise, my beloved Skip. To our extended family, on behalf of my mother Elsie and our immediate family, please know that we remain with you in spirit and in prayer. May God continue to comfort, protect and strengthen you during this difficult time. We love you all so very much,
Regina S.

To the James Family,
God has called and Skip has answered, though his leaving has created a void in your life and a hole in your hearts. Our friendship had begun at Virginia Union University and has covered many years and miles (Pennsylvania). Skip has always been an amazing person, making friends with ease. At VUU’s Homecoming, he was a must see guy, before returning home. Skip has made it home with the Father. We will see him again, at our ‘heavenly reunion’! Our prayers are to encourage you to trust God promise in Jesus to us, ‘That where I am, you shall be always; …I go now to prepare a room for you. Skip is with God! Weeping may endure for a night, but joy comes in the morning. Skip, I will see you in the morning…
Submitted in Love from Your Brother,

Ernest, "Skip", was a coworker of mine on our government job which involved employment rights. He was zealously enthusiastic, devoted to -- and had special pride in -- his work, especially in the area of disability rights and opportunities. He also could always be counted on to be an inquisitive listener and add a witty sense of humor to the conversation. I know he was truly a proud father and husband who doted on his family. And always a proud alumnus of VUU. May God perpetually bless Ernest's soul and family.

To the family of Ernest Skip James,
We were so saddened to hear about the passing of Skip our beloved cousin. He was a good man with sweet spirit who always cared for and loved his family, church family, and friends. He would often call to check on us to see how we were doing. He will truly be missed. To be absent from the body is to be present with the Lord. Rest in paradise Skip.... We love you!! It is with a heavy heart, after many restless nights, that I’m trying to process the loss of not only my dearest cousin, but my closest friend of almost 50 years. We had such a history; experienced so many memorable moments in our lives – too numerous to name. We continually supported, encouraged and prayed for each other, even when we were not able to be together physically much later in life. I will always remember Skip as my brother and confidant. I will be forever grateful to have had the kind of bond countless others can only hope for. Many prayers and blessings to our beloved’s family for God’s peace, protection and strength during such an incredibly difficult time.
