Mariah Jean Jones Gilliam was born on September 6,1929 in Cartersville, Virginia to Warner Jones and Laura Street Jones.

At an early age, she accepted Christ and became a member of New Hope Baptist Church. She graduated from Cumberland County Public Schools.

Jean married the love of her life, Henry Adolph Gilliam and together they reared three sons. They shared a life together for seventy-two years.

She was employed as a custodian at the University of Richmond for ten years until her retirement.

Jean enjoyed cooking, spending time with her family and friends. She loved attending church and was an active member. She sang in the choir, participated in the missionary ministry and served as the church clerk for many years. "Mama Jean" was a strong, loving mother and devoted grandmother. Affectionately called "Mama Jean," she was wise, would listen, and often give her family words of encouragement.

Jean went home to be with her heavenly father on Friday, March 17, 2023. She was preceded in death by; her husband, parents, son Larry, one sister, Eloise "DeDe" Austin, three brothers; James Street, Frank Jones, and Warner "High-Pocket" Jones.

She leaves to cherish fond memories: two sons, Leon Gilliam (Virdy), Jerry Gilliam (Karan), daughter in-love, Donna; four grandchildren, Angelette, Shonda, Sean (Toni), and Jennifer (Brandon); eleven great grandchildren including the eldest, Jamal Gilliam, brothers-in-law; Robert Gilliam (Dorothy), Wylie Gilliam (Dee); sisters-in-law; Carrie Gilliam, Susie (Robert), Annie Gilliam, and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends.

Together Again

A reunion occurred in heaven this week.

Of the sweetest and most joyful kind

As Mom's spirit moved beyond this earth

And what a reunion it must have been!

A joy beyond our conceiving

When Mom met Dad in heaven again

And we are certain Dad is still holding Mom's hand

While she cherishes each moment by his side

And they're experiencing the joy of being together again.

We are confident they are also looking over us

Hoping this happiness will lessen our pain

As we contemplate the joy that they finally feel

Now that they are together again

So although we'll miss our mom profoundly

Our grief is somewhat lessened

For we are comforted knowing that she led a good life

And she and Dad are now together in heaven
