Obituary of Mary Hicks Fleming

Mary Hicks was born on October 30, 1955, to Alfred and Mary Hicks of Powhatan, Virginia. Mary lived and was educated in Powhatan and at an early age committed her life to Christ. She was a member of Hollywood Baptist Church. During her membership at Hollywood Baptist Church, Mary was a dedicated member of the church choir. Over the course of 50 years of choir membership, Mary held positions as choir president and librarian. She also served on the Trustee Ministry for over 30 years. Mary would often be seen at the church on Saturdays, preparing for Sunday service, prepping music for the choir members, and sorting church mail and notices for the various church ministries. Mary was a devoted follower of Jesus and was faithful in worship. Mary was known to say the things she did were because of her love for God and her church. She often quoted "God has been good to me" and "I love to praise him." In June of 1995, Mary married George Joseph Fleming. They were married for 26 years and resided in Powhatan, Virginia. Mary was a devoted wife, loving mother to her three bonus children and homemaker. She enjoyed cooking, taking a ride on George's motorcycle, taking drives with George to Farmville and going out to breakfast. She enjoyed spending her days with George and their Bassett Hound, Oscare. Mary was employed as a Benefit Program Specialist at Powhatan Department of Social Services for 23 years. She was known to be a dedicated employee who always went above and beyond for her clients. She retired in June 2021. On December 3, 2021, Mary Hicks Fleming went to be with the Lord and entered eternal rest. She was preceded in death by her parents. She leaves to cherish fond memories, devoted husband, George, three bonus children, Ebony Fleming of Chesterfield, VA, Natalie Fleming-Southers (Shaun) of Powhatan, VA and, Adrian Fleming of Richmond VA; two bonus grandchildren, Anaya Fleming-Jones and Kendyl Southers of Powhatan, VA , siblings, Ercelle Simms (Peter) of Powhatan, VA and her twin-Alfred T. Hicks, Jr. (Deborah) of Chesterfield, VA; two devoted nieces Nechelle Atkinson (Ronn) of Powhatan, VA and Marcha Williams (Shawn) of Chesterfield, VA; one great nephew Brandon Atkinson; two great nieces Jayla and Janiyah Williams;, and a host of other nieces, nephews, friends and family.
