Obituary of Roberta Hargrove Taylor

Roberta Taylor, daughter of the late George Hargrove and Gertrude Person Hargrove, was born in Mecklenburg County, Virginia on July 29, 1924. She attended public schools in Richmond, Virginia and later Virginia State College in Petersburg, Virginia. There she met Clarence Taylor, Sr. They married in 1942 and became parents to four children. Roberta and her husband moved to Patterson, New Jersey in 1949 where they remained for 17 years. They moved back to Cartersville, Virginia in 1965. Returning to Virginia, Roberta joined the Virginia Department of Corrections. She retired from the Virginia Correctional Facility for Women in Goochland after 17 years of service.
Her services to her church and community are numerous and long-standing. She was clerk of the Mount Calvary Baptist Church for 30+ years. Additionally, she was a member of the Cumberland Missionary and Education Conference and served as its president for 12 years, Director of Bright Hope Center, a life-time member of the Cumberland Branch NAACP, member of the Cartersville Women's Social Club and served on the Board of Directors of Peidmont Senior Resources, During the week, one could find Roberta at the Cumberland Clothes Closet helping to sort and hand out clothing. On Saturdays, she worked at the Cumberland Food Bank distributing food to the needy.
After an extended illness, she departed this life on Saturday, August 14,2010 at Retreat Hospital in Richmond, Virginia. She leaves to cherish fond memories two daughters: Clarissa Hatchett and Jean Turner, one daughter-in- law, Glenda Taylor, one son-in-law, Roy Reid, 10 grandchildren, 18 great- grandchildren, a niece, Candi Spivey, a devoted caretaker and friend, Ida Jones and a host of other relatives and friends.
