James Weldon Morris "Winkie" departed this life August 4, 2010 at Chippenham Hospital surrounded by family and friends. He was born on April 2 1933 to the late Alice Morris and the late James A. Morris. Having been reared in a Christian home James accepted Christ at an early age and joined the Mount Zion Baptist Church.
He graduated from Pocahontas High School in Powhatan, Virginia and them served several years in the United States Arm . During his time in the Army he served a tour of duty in German . On August 25, 1962 he was united in marriage to Gloria Dean Henderson who preceded him in death. From this union two children were born and another child was raised as their own.
He retired in 1996 from Pitney-Bowles in Stamford, Connecticut were he worked for over 30 years. He was known to have a gift at tinkering with electronics, digital items and music. James was an avid baseball player, fisherman and had a knack for playing pinochle. He was beloved by the pinochle players which included Mable Gilliam, Margaret Manning, Muriel Brown, Cynthia Epps
and Theresa Brown.
He was survived by a son Wade Morris (Connecticut), daughter Crystal Robinson (Powhatan), and god-son David Jones (Connecticut). He was preceded in death by one brother Bernard Morris and one sister Jacqueline Hicks. He leaves to cherish his memory two brothers Leon Morris and Lloyd Morris (Maryland), six sisters Shirley Martin, Cynthia Epps, Janet Morris, Maria Cosby (Powhatan), Edna Morris (Washington D.C.), and Irma Fleming (Richmond). Eight sister in-laws and three brother in-laws. Four grandchildren Travis Burroughs, Derrick Wilson, Kayla Robinson and Van Malik Robinson. God son James Martin and God daughter Sheila Ross. He also leaves behind three great grandchildren, Juel Wilson, Anaiyah, Autumn Burroughs and a host of nieces nephews, cousins and friends.
