Obituary of Carnell William Hughes
Please share a memory of Carnell to include in a keepsake book for family and friends.
Carnell William Hughes, affectionately known as Bubba, was born on August 7, 1942 in Powhatan County, VA to the late Samuel Carnell Hughes and Fannie Isabel Tinsley Hughes.
Carnell attended school in Powhatan County. In 1964, he enlisted in the Army.
After his honorable discharge from the military, he began working at E. R. Carpenter and Heartland Express. While working for the other companies, Bubba became his own boss and started farming, cutting wood, and working as a mechanic full-time to take care of his family.
Carnell and his life partner, Cordelia Davis, had two sons, William Fitzgerald Davis and Darren Christopher Davis.
There were many people and things that brought Carnell happiness. He was ecstatic about being a father in-law and enjoyed telling people about his "daughter" that he "always" wanted. Carnell loved being a father and providing for his family. He enjoyed the outdoors, farming, playing numbers, hunting, repairing his machinery, spending time with his siblings and, recently, watching his favorite TV shows.
Carnell was baptized at an early age and joined Mt. Pero Baptist Church. He was steadfast on sending his tithes and offerings in to church and could be seen reading his bible or praying while sitting in his favorite chair in the kitchen.
One brother, Fitzgerald Hughes, preceded Carnell in death.
Carnell is survived by his life partner, Cordelia Davis; two sons, William Davis and Darren Davis (Kim); two grandsons, Christopher McLean, Jr. and Marquan Mitchell; eight siblings, Evelyn Edley, Josephine Goodman (Obadiah), Margaret Taylor, Rev. Payton Hughes (Shirley), Erma Carle, Reginald Hughes, Eric Hughes (Sylvia), and Earl Hughes (Wanda); two brothers-in-law, Timothy Davis and Kelvin Davis; two sisters-in-law, Alfreda Terrell and Roxanne May; two aunts, Blanche Hughes Johnson and Margaret Hughes Gainey; two uncles, James Tinsley (Martha) and William Tinsley; devoted niece, D'Andra "DeeDee" Hughes; two special family friends, Shirley I. Hughes and Deborah Winston; two devoted cousins, Jimmy Tinsley and Anthony Langley; and a host of nieces, nephews, family, and friends.
