Obituary
Obituary of Shirley Roberta Bolden
Please share a memory of Shirley to include in a keepsake book for family and friends.
Shirley Roberta (Logan) Bolden was born on January 26, 1938 in Baltimore, Maryland to William Logan and Alberta Jones Logan. She attended Cumberland, Va. Public schools and joined the Mt. Olive Baptist Church at a young age. She married Royal B. Bolden and from that union, they had six children. Though a quiet and loving woman who adored living alone, Shirley delighted in the visits from her children, grandchildren, siblings, as well as other family, and friends.
The Bible was her constant companion, which she studied fervently. Shirley's faith and an ability to dream, inspired her to write many poems. In the early 1960's she had one of her poems recorded on a 45 which was played until it was worn out. In the 1990's, two poems were published in a hard back Poetry Guild publication, Whispers of the Heart and she received "local poet" recognition in the Farmville Herald. Guitar, reading romance and mystery novels, as well as donating to causes involving needy
children worldwide, were additional passions. Shirley was a breast cancer survivor twice.
On Thursday, May 28, 2015, Shirley departed this life in Farmville, Virginia. She was preceded in death by her parents; husband; daughter, Cynthia Bolden Carr; and sister, Mary B. Harris.
Left to cherish her memory are children, Royal [Bruce] Bolden (Darlene), Colleen Bolden, Ricky Bolden, Shirley Johnson, and Michael Bolden (Stocktina); sisters, Carrie Squires (Clarence) and Nannie Harris; brothers, Willis Logan, Freddie Harris, Robert Harris (Theresa), Charlie Harris (Donna), Wert Harris, Timothy and Jerry Logan; 18 grandchildren; 18 great grandchildren; sister-in- laws, Edmonia Carter, Elsie Trent, Thelma Jones (James), Mabel Gregory (Joseph) and Lillian Bolden; brothers-in-law, Jefferson (Elsie) and Thomas Bolden (Cecelia), great aunts, Catherine Smith and Elna Dangerfield; a devoted cousin, William Davenport, and a host of nieces, nephews, family, and friends.
