Obituary of George Carl Morris

Please share a memory of George to include in a keepsake book for family and friends.
George Carl Morris departed this life on December 26, 2012. He was born in Powhatan County, Virginia on August 21, 1915. He was known to family and friends as "Carl." Carl was the eighth of eleven children born to the late George and Annie Bell Morris. Carl was baptized into the fellowship of the Mount Zion Baptist Church at an early age. He was a member of the Willing Worker's Club and served the people in the community. He cheerfully served as treasurer of the Greenbrier Sunday school for many years. He attended the Powhatan County Public Schools. After completion of his education, he worked with his father and brothers on the farm in Powhatan. Then he decided to try something different. He moved to New York and worked on the potato farm on Long Island. After discovering that Long Island's weather was too bitter and cold for him, he returned to his home in Powhatan. Upon his return, he worked with his uncle building houses. Later he decided to venture out on his own. He did carpentry and plumbing work in Powhatan and surrounding counties. He met the love of his life, Mary Bradley at Mount Zion Baptist Church and married her in 1940. From this union, they had four children, Kay, Jerome, Denise and Wayne. Some of his hobbies included hunting, fishing, planting a garden and growing flowers. His favorite hobby was gardening. For many years, he grew vegetables for his family to eat and shared his garden with the people in the community. He was active with the civil rights movement and attended the march on Washington and various rallies in Powhatan and surrounding counties. He was a faithful member of Mount Zion Baptist Church until his health failed. He leaves to cherish his memory two daughters, Kay Wilson of Powhatan and Denise Morris Branch of Chesterfield; a son, Wayne Morris (Janice) of Powhatan; one brother, Elton Morris of Richmond; a sister-in-law, Helen Morris of Powhatan; six grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.
