Cardell E. Jackson-Barnes was born June 18, 1924 in Powhatan County, VA. On February 11,2012 Cardell fell asleep in death peacefully at her home surrounded by family. She was the oldest daughter of the late Harry and Mary (Robinson) Jackson. She was preceded in death by her parents and five siblings: Linwood Jackson, Paige McFarley, Harry Jackson, Jr., Mahalia Moore, and Chauncey Jackson. Her childhood was spent in Powhatan, VA where she attended Loganville School in Trenholm and became a member of the Mt. Zion Baptist church. At the age of sixteen she moved to Richmond, V A to work in order to help support her widowed mother and siblings. In 1941, Cardell moved to New York City, NY where she worked at a few high end beauty salons until she retired in 1992. She was united in marriage on April 27, 1946 to William Barnes. Later, in 1953 she and her husband moved to Englewood, NJ where they loved and cherished each other until he preceded her in death in 1990. She would often reminisce about "Bill" and what beautiful times they spent together. Cardell, was affectionately known as "Auntie," not only to her nieces and nephews but to loved ones and many friends. She was well known in Englewood for having such a lush garden filled with flowers and vegetables where she worked from morning to evening. In addition, she loved to bake and cook for her family, especially the family favorites--cheesecake and sweet potato pie. To know her was to love her. She was very upbeat, generous, loving, and selfless. Cardell leaves to cherish wonderful memories: two brothers, Howard Jackson (Rebecca), Yonkers, NY; Alexander Jackson (Mary), Powhatan, VA; one sister Audrey Bell, Powhatan, V A; one brother-in-law Cannon McFarley, Powhatan, VA; two sister-in-laws Mary Alice Jackson, Cartersville, VA and Esther Aviles, Bronx, NY; and a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives, and friends.
