Claire B. Surles was born on November 8, 1932 to Grant and Martha Mayo in Cumberland County, VA and departed life on December 13, 2015 in Richmond, VA. She was one of 6 children born to her parents. She went to school in Cumberland Co. and moved to Richmond as a young adult. Later, she moved to New Jersey where she worked for New Jersey Bell. After retirement from New Jersey Bell she moved back to Richmond to be closer to family. Claire was a dedicated and loyal member of Ephesus Seventh-day Adventist Church. She served with her beautiful smile as an usher and faithful team member of Ephesus Community Services. Claire was preceded in death by her husband, James; her parents, Grant, Jr. and Martha Mayo; brother, Acie Mayo; sister, Pearlene Johnson; son-in-law, Rev. Donald Trent; great granddaughter, Briele Bullock. She leaves to mourn her passing, two sisters, Mary Davis of Columbia, VA and Cora Crump (Dave) of Richmond; one brother, Grant Mayo, III (Ernestine) of Richmond; two daughters; Gloria Jean Trent of Columbia, VA and Barbara Ann Bullock (David) of Waynesboro, VA; 5 grandchildren, Donald, David II, Stevie, Montesa and Sheena; 9 great grandchildren and a host of other relatives and friends.
