William R. Bennett Obituary

“I will say of the LORD, He is my refuge and my fortress: my God; in him will I trust. Surely he shall deliver thee from the snare of the fowler, and from the noisome pestilence. He shall cover thee with his feathers, and under his wings shalt thou trust: his truth shall be thy shield and buckler.”– Psalms 91:2-4

William Royal Bennett, fondly known as “Bennett”, was born on July 28, 1943, in Pineville, SC to Jethro and Geneva McElveen Bennett.

He received his early education at J.K. Elementary School, a place he often fondly recalled. He later graduated from Russellville High School.

He accepted Christ at an early age and was a member of Redeemer R.E. Church in Pineville, SC. After moving to Virginia, he faithfully attended Bright and Morning Star Holy Church until his health declined. His devotion to God and his family was the foundation of his life.

William dedicated over 25 years of service to the New York City Transit Authority, where he enjoyed meeting and interacting with people each day. After relocating to Virginia, he continued his commitment to serving others as a bus trainer for Midlothian Middle School for more than 15 years, while also sharing his passion for martial arts by teaching karate classes part-time at American Family Fitness. William was also an avid bowler, enjoying many games, competitions, and friendships built at the lanes. His laughter, warmth, and competitive spirit brought joy to those around him.

On March 26, 1974, William was united in holy matrimony to Mary Louise Gregory. They made their home in New York City, until they decided to move to Midlothian, VA. They happily shared 51 years of love and commitment.

William is survived by his devoted wife Mary Louise Bennett; siblings Mrs. Evelyn Manuel, Mrs. Eugenia Sumter of New Jersey and Synovia Daniels (Richard) of South Carolina; Isaac Bennett of New York, and Jethro Bennett of New Jersey and goddaughter, Kisha Rawlings of Pennsylvania; sister-in-laws Florence Gregory, Irma Gregory, Ann Gregory, Barbara Bethea, Sharon Knight (Ross); brother-in-laws Joseph Gregory (Mable), Waverly Gregory, Earl Gregory, and James Gregory (Maxine) and many other beloved nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends.

He was preceded in death by his parents and his sister Hattie Bennett Steward. T

hroughout his illness, William was lovingly surrounded with care, devotion, and support from The Freeman Family and Sheila Gregory, who offered him comfort and strength during that time.
