Obituary of Ronald Eugene Huggins

Obituary The soul tossed about in The Great Controversy is now at rest. Ronald Eugene Huggins passed away on February 4, 2025. The record of Ronald's life now rests with his Creator and Redeemer. He leaves two sons, Chasko Huggins and Owenico Huggins of Cumberland, Virginia, and a daughter Natonya D. Huggins of Waldorf, Maryland. Ronald was an avid reader, well-versed in politics, history, and geography, and had a special interest in genealogy. However, when he started his research in the late 1970s, records were not easily accessible, and individuals did not freely offer information. We submit the most precise genealogical information discovered to date in his memory. Ronald Eugene Huggins was born in New Haven on January 4, 1940, to Inez May Singleton and Edward Ernest Huggins, Sr. On his maternal side, he is the grandson of Clinton Robert Singleton and Alice Ada Thompson, daughter of Theodore Alexandar Thompson, a vestryman of St. Luke's Episcopal Church in New Haven, Connecticut and Annie Moore Thomas. He was the great-grandson of William F. Singleton, who served as the 4th Sergeant in the 31st United States Colored Regiment during the Civil War, and Susan Matilda Savage Talbot, daughter of Tobias and Margaret Savage. William F. Singleton's Civil War service Spencer Rifle is on display at the Mashantucket Pequot Museum. Ronald's 3X grandparents were Mary Jane Niles/Prince and William E. Singleton. Mary Jane Niles/Prince was the daughter of Jabez Niles/Prince and Jane "Jenny" Williams. William F. Singleton's grandfather, Jabez Niles/Prince, sued the Overseer Ulysses Avery of the Pequots Tribe of Indians located in the Town of Ledyard in 1859. The New London Superior Court ruled in Jabez's favor because his "lineal descent from his mother [Annie/Ann] and maternal ancestors" were of the Pequot Tribe from the Ledyard, Connecticut area." One record suggests that Jabez Niles/Prince's wife Jane "Jenny" Williams, the daughter of the former slave and famed preacher of Second Baptist Church of Groton, Quash Williams, also had a Pequot mother. On his paternal side, Ronald is the grandson of Edward Samuel Huggins and Meloria Ann Gilfillan. He is also the great-grandson of Alexander Huggins and Jane Ann Woolard. ______Huggins and Ann Wyatt-Weekes were his 3X grandparents. All grandparents were born in St. Kitts, the British West Indies. Ronald was predeceased by his wife of thirty-seven years, Mary Louise McGhee, who died in 2006. His siblings, Meloria Huggins Rowland (John) of Prospect, CT; Edward E. Huggins, Jr. (Pat); Clinton Robert Huggins (Kathy) of Carlsbad, CA; Helene Huggins Antunes (Jack) of New Haven, CT; Paul A. Huggins (Joan) of Prospect, CT; and Wilfred Huggins of New Haven, CT, also predeceased him.
