Obituary of Winford L Spears
Please share a memory of Winford to include in a keepsake book for family and friends.
Winford "Win" Lee Spears was born on March 17, 1940 to the late Willie and Maggie Spears. He was the youngest of three children brought forth by this union. Although the family hailed from Hallsboro, North Carolina, they eventually made New York City their home.
Despite being a gifted student, Win quickly grew tired of school and instead followed his entrepreneurial spirit. This led to many successful and very productive business ventures which brought him notoriety and considerable wealth at an early age.
His business pursuits included ownership and management of bowling alleys, bars, clubs, etc. Win's outgoing personality, quick wit, size, and athletic ability enabled him to safely navigate inner city environments without difficulty. Win enjoyed big cars and was a sharp dresser. These attributes eventually brought him to the attention of "Miss Audrey" ...who became the love of his life. After many years in New York, the family retired to Cumberland County. The couple enjoyed over 50 years together until Audrey's passing in 2014.
Win operated the family business, Booker's Restaurant, in Cumberland. Then, later in life, he worked as a contracted transportation provider for Medicaid clients and for students at Elk Hill Farm, a private non-profit organization.
Eventually, Win was introduced to Lillie Jackson who became his devoted companion and confidant. The two enjoyed their time together laughing, sharing stories, and traveling. He also enjoyed his family, friends, and special gatherings.
Win leaves many to celebrate his life: one daughter, Wendy Spears-Johnson (Fred): sons, Ronald (Linda), Nickolas, Winn, Russell Spears (Teresa), Dwayne Robinson (Doreen), and Kenneth Spears; 23 grandchildren; 22 great-grandchildren; numerous nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends.
