James Eddie Brown was born in Cumberland, VA on February 2, 1948 to Eddie and Lillie Alma Langhorne Brown. He was one of five children, three girls and two boys. James attended Cedar Fork and Cumberland County Public Schools in Cumberland, VA. He accepted Christ at an early age and was baptized at Rocky Mount Baptist Church in Cumberland, VA where he served faithfully on the Usher's Ministry. On March 30, 1996 he was united in marriage to Cecelia Virginia Smith in Cumberland, VA. He joined Randolph Lodge #30 Free & Accepted Masons, Inc. where he was a faithful member for many years. He worked a variety of jobs in a few different states; North Carolina, Maine as a busboy, Longwood College as a custodian for approximately 7 years. James worked for Cumberland VDOT for a few years and his last employment was with the Town of Farmville as a Foreman from July 16, 1974 to February 7, 2014 until his retirement. James aka Beadie, loved to be with family & friends and enjoyed every minute that he spent with his grandchildren. Beadie was known for his big smile and his willingness to help anyone in need. He had a sense of humor and loved to make you laugh. James was admired by many; even his lil buddy that he would talk to in the mornings- Takiyah Hampton. James was called to eternal rest at St. Mary's Hospital on June 23, 2016. He was preceded in death by his father, Eddie Brown; one brother, Leroy Brown: one sister, Ann Brown: and 8 uncles, Fancy Brown, Herbert Brown, Earl Brown, Jacob Langhorne, Warren Langhorne, John Langhorne, and Leake Jones. James will be remembered by his wife, Cecelia V. Brown; daughter, Earlene Smith; 3 grandchildren, Erica, Taina & Diquan; two great grandchildren, Raionna & Carron; his mother, Lillie Alma Brown; 2 sisters, Lelia Trent (Gerry) and Sandra Steele (MacArthur); 2 aunts, Patty and Minnie Langhorne; 3 uncles, Levi Langhorne, Carl Brown (Doris) and Russell Brown (Camyoria); 4 sisters-in-law, Cleaster Trent (Charles), Nora Bland (Wallace), Linda Langhorne & Dorothy Goff; 2 brothers-in-law, Warnell Smith and David Smith (Frances); along with numerous nieces, one devoted, Chakita Langhorne, nephews, cousins, 4 close cousins, Rose Langhorne (Sherman), Addie Trent, Earl Brown, Jr. and Kenny Brown and friends, one he thought of like a brother, Walter Langhorne, and a best friend, Mickey Allen. Two devoted co-workers, Mike Gaines and Keith Gilliam. Papa, you will always live in our hearts. You are in a better place watching over us. We thank you so much for all you did for us. You are our world. You will be missed! Love you, Hoot, Squirrel (Erica), TY (Taina), Billy Beaver (Diquan), Lil man (Carron) and Cootie (Raionna). As only you would call us.
