Obituary of Margaret Sears Owens

Margaret Sears Owens, the daughter of the late Lott A. Sears and Alice Washington Sears was born February 7, 1943. She was reared in a loving home with five sisters, three of whom preceded her in death. (Lillian, Ruth and Evelyn.) At an early age, Margaret was converted, baptized, and joined the Tearwallet Baptist Church in Cumberland, Virginia, where her membership remained. Margaret was the assistant clerk of Tearwallet, secretary of the Tearwallet Pastor's Aid Ministry as well as other committees that she served on. Margaret graduated from Luther P. Jackson High School after which she attended Virginia State College (now University) in Petersburg, Virginia graduating in 1967 with a Bachelor of Science degree. After graduating Margaret taught in Brunswick County, Virginia for two years. Then she moved to Cincinnati, Ohio where she taught for 32 years. Margaret retired in 2000 from the Cincinnati Ohio Public School System. In 2004 she then moved back to Virginia. She then worked for a few years at Willow Oaks in Cartersville. Margaret loved to stay active. She traveled many places, she enjoyed plays, movies, concerts, visiting with family, gardening and cooking. She loved to go with her friends for lunch and other activities. Margaret was fun to be around and her wonderful laugh will always be remembered. Margaret was a member of Cumberland County Branch NAACP and Order of Elks. On Thursday, October 22, 2015, Margaret departed this life at St. Mary's Hospital in Richmond, Virginia. She will be greatly missed by her family and friends. Her memory will be cherished by her loving and devoted goddaughters (nieces), Renell Brown Steward (Harry), Antoinette C. Brown and Tiana Anderson; two devoted sisters, Virginia Sears Little and Doris Sears Brown (Carl); one devoted niece and nephew, Lavunda (Von) Brown and Lawrence (Skeet) Brown; other nieces and nephews, Clarence A. Holcomb (Coletta), Deborah H. Travis (David), Wayne W. Holcomb (Terri); great nieces and nephews, Marquise Jones, Lawrence Brown II, Melanie H. Simpson (Brandon), David B. Travis III, Shannon Smith, Dionne Travis, Danette T. Sajous (Carl), Shantel Holcomb, Clarence A. Holcomb Jr., Darrion Holcomb and Lillian Holcomb; one aunt, Mrs. Viola Sears; a number of cousins, other relatives and friends.
