Please share a memory of Alma to include in a keepsake book for family and friends.
Alma Gracie Harris Morris was born in Powhatan, Virginia on February 3, 1918 to Lee Thaniel and Minnie Bell Harris. Alma was educated in Powhatan Public Schools. She was baptized at a young age and became a faithful member of Mt. Zion Baptist Church for the duration of her life. She also served with other ministries including the Willing Workers. Before marriage, Alma went north and worked. She returned to Powhatan, married John, and was a homemaker until after the births of her six children. She worked as a domestic and retired from working in the Laundry Room at St. Francis DeSales High School. Alma was a quiet woman who spent most of her life as a devoted wife and mother. She loved to read books, especially the Bible, and wrote letters and cards to family and friends. Alma loved to travel with her family or to see members of her family. She made trips all over the United States and to Germany and Japan as well. Alma was a great cook who prepared many delicious meals from scratch. She was also a faithful woman and led her children in Bible study on Saturday mornings. While she did not force her beliefs on her children, her Christian example helped mold the character and values of her children. Alma lived a full life and her love will continue on in her family and the many people who had the pleasure of knowing her. Alma died at St. Francis Hospital on December 27, 2014. Her husband, John, and an infant son, Claudius, preceded her in death. She is survived by her children; a daughter, Vivian M. Hicks; sons, Kenneth (Joyce), Yao, Michael (Darlene); devoted caregivers, Victor (Laurie); grandchildren, Crystal (Oakie), Tracy (Jerome), Joseph, Danielle, Justin (Cassandra), Tiffany, Latoria and Jason; thirteen great-grandchildren; sister, Ruth Esther Witter; sister-in-law, Ruthie Harris; brother-in-law, Jimmie Clarke; numerous nieces, two devoted, Evelyn Woolridge and Gilda Weaver; nephews; cousins, one devoted, Mabel Gilliam and friends.
