William E. Anderson, Jr. was born on June 12, 1949 in Cumberland, Virginia to the late William Sr., and Marinda B. Anderson. He was reared in the home along with six siblings, one of whom, Curtis, preceded him in death. He departed this life on Monday, October 9, 2017, at his home in Dillwyn, Virginia. In his early years, he was baptized and joined the Petersville Baptist Church where his membership remained until his passing.
He was educated in the Cumberland County Public School System, graduating as salutatorian of the class of '67 of Luther P. Jackson High School. He furthered his education at Shaw University in Raleigh, North Carolina where he earned a Bachelor of Science Degree in Business Management. Following graduation, he relocated to New Jersey where he began his career as manager of Woolworth Department Store in New York City for many years. After, he was offered a managerial position at Woolworth in St. Croix, USVI where he resided for 13 years before returning home to Virginia.
In 1993, William returned to Cumberland. He was employed by Dillwyn Correctional Center for 16 years. His dedication earned him a promotion to the rank of Lieutenant where he served diligently until his retirement in 2011.
"Bro," as he was affectionately known was always a private person. He loved working on cars and small engines and he received his greatest joys from spoiling his sister, Pam, whom he would tell you, "that's my heart right there," and spending time with his best friend since the third grade, Burley S. Booker.
William leaves many to cherish his memory: one daughter, Suzette of St. Croix, USVI; two brothers, Raymond (Shirley) of Victoria, Virginia and Beryl of Irvington, New Jersey; three sisters, Bernice Mayo of Jersey City, New Jersey, Carrie (Bobby) Roberson of Garfield, Georgia, and Cheryl Bolden of Cumberland, Virginia; two grandchildren; two aunts, Rev. Annie Anderson and Florine Booker; his best friend and former caretaker, Burley (Carrie) Booker; and a host of loving nieces, nephews, cousins, other relatives, and friends.
